Erectile Dysfunction? You Might Have Peyronie's Disease

byAmy Hendel, P.A. Health Writer

There's a certainphysical condition associated with ED that often isn't talked about.

It's called Peyronie's disease, or penile curvature, and it typically presents with plaque or a hard lump that develops on the upper or lower side of the penis in the layers that contain the tissue that helps to form an erection. It can start as an inflammation and ultimately develop into a hardened scar.

Thesymptomscan come on slowly or suddenly, and one of the outcomes can be reduced flexibility of the penis, pain and a shortened penis when fully erect.

The way the penis physically looks can make a person feel ashamed, and it can also make it nearly impossible to experience fully pleasurable and successful sexual intercourse.

Causes

This disease can occur due to a predisposition (family history or genetic), infection, vascular problems, as a side effect from certain medications, diabetes, hypertension and other diseases.

If it remains untreated, you will have serious and ongoing ED.

Treatment options for Peyronie's disease

According to the National Institutes of Health, treatment options for Peyronie's disease include:

  • An FDA-approved nonsurgical prescription treatment in the form of an injection

  • 口服药物

  • Therapies, such as radiation therapy, to break up scarring

  • Mechanical traction or vacuum devices

  • Surgery (may be recommended in certain long-term cases)

Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about Peyronie's disease. They can help you find the best treatment for you.
